3DEE is a social worlds system based on the ActiveWorlds codebase. Like all systems based on this code, it looks and feels a bit dated, although this one has its own unique wrinkles to help take care of that. Based in Amsterdam, 3DEE?s primary language is Dutch, and the universe?s eight entrance worlds are loosely based around that theme.
The likeness to the physical version of the city is obvious as soon as you arrive. The world you land in is a competent duplicate of part of the city, and stretches for almost half a mile in all directions. This is not just window-dressing either, as everything is interactive. An economy of sorts exists here, and you can deposit in-world funding into your ?bank? or withdraw it via interactive cash points, to spend in stores throughout the city ? all of which offer actual goods and services.
There is even a casino, to gamble in with several chance-based games to win more money, although, like all casinos, the house eventually wins.
3DEE is a Dutch system, designed for Dutch people, however this does not mean they do not welcome all nationalities. Indeed, they have a separate introduction world, albeit much smaller than the main one, which lists all computer-generated instructions in English. Many of the regulars also know some English, a fact for which this reviewer is very grateful.
The worlds of 3DEE are more interactive than is normal for ActiveWorlds based worlds. The skies change with different weather patterns, and the light levels change as the day turns into night. However, its fallacies are also evident.
All these buildings are just hollow shells. Aside from the ground floor, where shops and offices exist, and a few rooftop cafes like this one, the buildings are just hollow blocks, there for appearances and nothing else.
Most of the interactive buildings, as stated, are at street level: shops, cafes, information booths, a casino and a cinema showing actual films via streaming video. Advertising boards sit on top of several buildings, offering dynamic advert placement, which helps to bring money into 3DEE.
For some, its the thrill of discovery, the freedom to strike out, to pioneer. Whether its mapping new lands, or exploring unknown fields of endeavour, to be first, to boldly go, this is what explorers live for.
Not one of 3DEE?s worlds surveyed was larger than 80m across from end to end. Even with a community of worlds, this results in a small area to survey. Indeed, all eight tourist-accessible worlds were surveyed in just two days. Whilst several were found noteworthy for the high level of interaction experimentation taking place, none were large enough to become lost in for long.
The social life is the life for you. To chat, to roam, to gossip all day, and chatter all night. You are the heart of the party, and you are the soul. The drive to chatter, the need to gossip, stretching out, making connections, mind against mind, heart against heart. It keeps you going, it keeps you sane.
3DEE is a Dutch-speaking system primarily, and its smallish number of users ? a couple of thousand all told ? primarily chat through typed Dutch. Although most can understand and speak a little English, the limited vocabulary and strain on them, makes communication difficult for native English users. Client OS:Win 2K, Win 98, Win 2K, Win 2K
