World-Type

My SecureCyberspace is the product of Carnegie Mellon University. Designed
as an environment for children to learn responsible internet habits from, it
is a single-user, flash-based environment. Not a virtual world as such, it is
more of a game, which teaches responsible, safe behaviour when in multi-user
virtual environments.

The World in Brief

Created out of a marriage between Carnegie Mellon's Information Networking
Institute and CyLab, the world is a single-user experience that is designed
to otherwise have all the features a child would expect from a child-friendly
shared world: A personal room, purchasing of furniture for that room by spending
credits at the shop, interaction with others (scripted AI), and the ability
to freely wander.

Almost everything takes place inside the Carnegie Cyber Academy, where training
missions teach different Internet topics. The missions cover fundamental skills
such as how to spot spam, how to keep personal information private, and how
to identify Web site traps, such as dangerous pop-up windows, forms that ask
for personal information, and Web pages that show inappropriate content.

Through this world, players learn how to become safe, educated Cybercitizens
before entering the Internet on their own. Future development plans include
missions that address cyberbullying, social networking, software piracy, online
shopping, online gaming and netiquette.

The world went live in October 2007, and is freely available to as many individuals,
and schools, as it can flag down.

Sub Reviews

Here at Virtual Worldlets, we look at all worlds, whether for entertainment, training, medicare, industry or military use. Thus, we have the situation where different uses judge by different criteria. Below are a series of sub-reviews, each tailored to a different aspect of the world.

Achievers
Work, work work. Everybody... You have this burning desire to succeed, to achieve renown, to be the best in whatever field you set your sights to. No matter what, you must be the best... What will you be? A powerful warlord? The leader of a town? You're ambitious, and crave power? This section is for you.

The missions are level based, and as each is completed, a badge is awarded,
the next level is unlocked, and credits are awarded. Credits are used in the
shop to buy furniture to customise the child's room, which adds to a sense of
achievement for the duration of the academy training.

Overall

My SecureCyberspace is a noble effort. It is bright, friendly, and tries hard
to educate without lookingl ike its trying to educate. Its not really something
for those over the ages of about 8-13, but then it was never designed to be.
The interface is bright and colourful, and the missions rarely speak down to
the user.

It is worth trying if you have children, or uploading to a school network,
purely as its sole purpose is to encourage safe online habits, and render children
immune to predation.
