Attached Shadow

An attached shadow is a shadow cast by an object in a virtual environment, that is cast onto its own surface. As such the shadow exists entirely in model space, and is usually dealt with in a very swift manner, by including it as a mask on the alpha channel of the affected surfaces.

In this manner, the illusion of shadows is created, without the need to track any actual rays of light from the light source. Instead, only the relative position of the light source is calculated, and shadows calculated according to the angle away from that source, the face is placed at.
