Graphics pipeline

The graphics pipeline is part of a GPU architecture, responsible for an increase in hardware rendering speeds. Almost identical in function to a CPU pipeline, a graphics pipeline is utilised when there is a large batch of similar instructions to process.

Rather than deal with each instruction separately, they are pipelined for maximum efficiency. Instead of taking each section of a texturemap or individual vertex of a model, processing it and returning for the next one, pipelining configures the hardware to accept the first instruction, and once that has started being processed, take the next one and the next one in order. In this manner, at any time one instruction completes, another is entering into an earlier stage in the pipeline, and several are partially completed.
