Virtual Clay

Virtual Clay is a less precise term often used by mainstream press to describe Voxel Sculpting.

Voxel Sculpting is a voxel (3D pixel) based method of creating volumetric models. Unlike mesh models, these are like blocks of clay. The space filled entirely with three-dimensional pixels, and no hollow space in the centre. Thus, just like clay, it is possible to model by sculpting a voxel block - carving gouges out and teasing the material.

Whilst virtual, the modelling package used will react like the model is clay, imparting physics onto it, and allowing models to be produced in an extremely intuitive fashion.

Voxel sculpting is often combined with full VR hardware interface rigs to allow the modeller to feel the ?virtual clay? as they work. Once completed, the model may stay as a voxel sculpture, or be converted to a mesh-based model for import into other virtual environments.

The parts specific to clay working are irrelevant to the virtual developer, but the general techniques and practices are invaluable if you choose to take this route, and create anatomically believable avatars. Ideal for working with weighted bone animation systems.

Julian Dibbell, freelance writer, and author of ?A Tiny Life? and other works chronicling the massive, disruptive impact of virtual lives on both the physical and the virtual. He tried a little experiment: was it possible to make more money from his forays into the virtual, buying and selling virtual items, than he makes as a successful writer?
