Alpha Channels

Alphas are parts of a texture image that are stored along with the colour value, that signify how transparent that pixel of an image is. For each RGB pixel value, a value between 0 and 1 is stored in an alpha channel. 0 is fully transparent, 1 is fully solid. Any real number between the two can be entered, up to the number of bits in the image file. Typically, 8, 16, 24, or 32 bits.
