Attenuation Coefficient

The attenuation coefficient is a luminosity texturemap that is applied, not to the objects themselves, but to the virtual world, superimposed over world cells, as a greyscale grid for use by raycasting or raytracing algorithms. Its purpose is to let the render engine know the atmospheric light absorption traits of that particular cell, to factor into other coefficients for calculating reflective and source light levels passing through.
