A chat bot, also known as either a chatterbot or a chatbot, is both a bot and a limited AI creation. Its an external program complete unto itself that can be plugged into a virtual environment and given an avatar to wear. It is also an AI designed with varying degrees of success, to have enough mastery of human language, sentence structure and constructive reasoning, to be able to converse with a human at length to the point that the human believes they are conversing with another human.

It uses the Turing Test for AI, as conceptualised by Alan Turing in the 1950 paper "Computing machinery and intelligence". In the decades since then, the Loebner prize is the first attempt to take the Turing test seriously, as a benchmark for AI.
Textual communication, as exhibited by chat rooms, MUDs, graphic social VRs, and MMOs, is itself a form of voice, a virtual voice. There are many who cannot speak properly, through the many disabilities which can affect voice: ME which wastes muscles away; cerebral palsy, which limits fine motor control; Parkinsons, which plays with signals from the brain to the body, or simple paralysis.
