A decal is slightly similar to a facer, only instead of being a freestanding texture, it is overlaid dynamically upon a texture of an existing polygon. Decals are meant to represent player generated change to the environment without actually changing the geometry. Bullet holes and blood on walls in videogames are both examples of decals.
