Functional Near-Infrared Imaging

Functional Near-Infrared Imaging or fNIR, is a non-invasive form of brain activity monitoring, or neural input whose results are derived from the coupling of the neuron system and the vascular system – activity patterns are determined by the concentration of oxygenated haemoglobin in blood vessels feeding different parts of the brain.

Because it monitors neuron activity indirectly, only general patterns of usage can be determined, and there is a variable time delay of seconds or in some cases even minutes, between the activity and the corresponding detection.
