GPU
Graphics Processing Unit. Unlike CPUs, GPUs are entirely dedicated to graphics processing work, and lurk on 3D accelerator cards, and chipsets. They excel at complex 3D equations, and are specifically designed for it - unlike the more traditional CPU general workhorses.
A GPU will happilly sit and crunch data, producing the graphical output demanded by VR systems, whilst the CPU continues working on general system drudgery.
GPUs can be combined in large numbers - even modern PCs will support two - to really accellerate the rate of graphical display systems.
