Interval Mapping

Interval mapping isn?t a stand-alone texture map adjustment method. Rather, it is a mapping method for other methods such as bump mapping or parallax mapping to use, when they are scanning for the next point to calculate. Rather than mapping each pixel per pixel, jumps of a pre-set distance are used, then jumped back on by half the length, until a pixel with a changed potential heightmap is reached. When used on textures such as bricks, or tiles, where most of the time, no change in height is necessary, this method saves computation time.

Interval mapping would be useless against a noise-based texture where every pixel would be a different height.

A Closer Look At Parallax Occlusion Mapping
An in-depth Gamedev article, containing step by step coding advice for implementing parallax occlusion mapping to textures, such that the simulated heights can even self-occlude.

This book is an attempt to cross-reference the techniques of mapping and charting the physical world, with attempts to chart cyberspace. All of cyberspace, from individual virtual environments, through to the world wide web, as a single cohesive whole, a second world of many worlds, for others to explore, possessing the maps to do so.
