Light Detection and Ranging LIDAR, or Light Detection and Ranging, is a real-time search and mapping technology, frequently used in machine vision systems. Basically the optical equivalent of radar, LIDAR works by sweeping out beams of light and using the reflected beams of scattered light to determine placement of objects in the area.
