MUD

MUD stands for Multi User Domain. It is also interpreted as Multi User Dungeon, harking back to its origins as computerised role-playing dungeons. MUDs were the first multi-user virtual worlds on the internet, with the first having been created by Roy Trubshaw and Doctor Richard Bartle in 1978. Since then, they have blossomed in size and complexity, to the point where the largest MUDs offer feature sets to rival the largest graphical worlds. In fact, many so called revolutionary graphical worlds were direct ports of MUDs. A good example of this would be EverQuest, which is virtually identical in function to DIKUmud, one of the primary strains of MUD.
