Object Recognition
Object recognition is a machine vision task, in which an object whose properties are already known to the system, is identified successfully by a camera system regardless of its location or orientation.
Since many physical world objects are capable of deformation and all are capable of being damaged or defaced, this task is much more complicated than it would seem from an initial standpoint.
Object recognition systems may for example, be required to recognise what a crisp packet is, regardless of whether it is unopened and full, open and full, open and empty, or scrunched up. This is a task the human object recognition capability is capable of, with relative ease. So it is a perfect example of the complexity of creating technological object recognition systems.
Identification of individuals is also a case of object recognition. Facial identification whether from above, straight on, in profile, or even covered by a balaclava or stocking, is still a form of visual object recognition.
