A phoneme, the natural counterpart to a viseme, is the smallest discrete sound that can be produced by the movement of the lips, teeth and tongue, by harmonised air provided by a voicebox. They are strung together to form words, and thus spoken language.

When phonemes are recreated virtually, the accompanying viseme should also be created, as otherwise the suspension of disbelief is often broken.
