Pinna

The human ear's pinna is the funnel shaped lobe of flesh that sticks out on either side of the head. It has several important roles to play not just in focusing incoming sounds into the ear, but also distorting, filtering and time delaying sounds. By understanding how the pinna affects the perception of sound, we are able to engineer more naturally believable auditory localization within virtual environments.
