Telematics is the combination of information systems and telecoms, thus creating the paradigm of transmitting information across the communications network. Typically, data is created by the sensor systems on one device, then stored and processed on that device before being sent on to another via standard communications channels, and from that other, leapfrogging to still others, on and on.

Telematics can be considered a founding technology of a sensor web.
