Terramechanics
Terramechanics is literally the study of the terra. More specifically, the study of deformable terra.
It is a study of the interaction between a vehicular body – such as a person's avatar say, and terrain that is capable of deforming under their feet (or wheels). How does the terrain respond to the incursion? How does the weight and weight distribution of the moving body affect it? How does the method of locomotion affect the deformation?
The better our knowledge of terramechanics, the more precisely we can answer such questions – and the less computing power we will require to do so.
