Tone Mapping Tone mapping is the practice of mapping a high luminosity range image such as that produced with high dynamic range imaging, to the display capabilities of a computer monitor. It does not apply to direct display methods like virtual retinal displays. Since like cameras, these displays can only manage a subset range of luminosity at any time, the prevailing method is to map lighting tones into that range, losing as little of the scene as possible.
