Trephination Trephination or trepanning was historically a semi-barbaric process in which a hole was drilled into the skull, to expose the brain to outside air. In neuroprosthetics it still has some use, as the process of penetrating the skull without damaging the brain underneath, in order to insert a deep brain neuroprosthetic.
