VHD

A volumetric haptic display or VHD is an attempt to create a 3D touch environment, for use in a VR or AR simulation. Different to stereohaptic feedback, this method requires an equal physical space to the virtual space being simulated, and projects the feeling of touch into the space.

The most usual method to achieve this is to excite the air in given areas of the enclosure using multiple emitters, so that the vibrations loosely excite the nerve endings. Unfortunately whilst it is touch, it is not a very realistic touch.

No successful way of simulating solid objects in this manner has yet been found.
