Exacting laser projection technology, in the form of a melding of both projection technology, and machine vision to accurately gauge distance and surface shape, first appeared in mid 2005 in the shape of the virtual laser keyboard. Since then, it has found its way into many devices, as a means of projecting a fully usable computer interface onto any surface, without requiring bulky hardware.

Now, electronics giant Philips is looking to take the technology one stage further. By super-sizing the projection systems, adding a high-powered laser, and affixing them to lampposts, Philips envisages what it calls ?a traffic information system?.

Each unit would be networked to the others, each containing a unique IP address, and able to respond to radio-frequency commands, as road hazards, weather conditions, and traffic density changes.

Working just like their smaller siblings, they would project intricate laser-light displays onto the tarmac of the road directly, forming visible hazard warning signs, speed restriction information, black ice warnings, or any other display, in a display bright enough to read in sunlight.
