Date posted: 02/06/2004 Virtual Reality to physical reality stories are nothing new, people have met life long partners in VR, have formed indelible bonds, and friendships as solid as a rock. Nevertheless, this story from the BBC illustrates just how the virtual has a way of cutting through cultural, socio-economic, and political boundaries to unite people with seemingly no other common interests. The members of the Halibuts, a player-clan from the MMOFPS PlanetSide, which included the BBC reporter, met up for the first physical ?reunion? recently. Coming from a radical mix of backgrounds, experience, income brackets, careers, and family landscapes, nothing could be more different about this group of guys. Unlikely to have ever met on common ground normally, a virtual world gave them a common focus, and a way to meet friends it would otherwise have been impossible to.
