Expanding Photographic VR
This story is from the category Total Immersion
Date posted: 04/08/2007
A new research project called Pocket Virtual Worlds is attempting to expand upon the virtual panorama concept somewhat. Developed as an educational tool, Pocket Virtual Worlds uses cyclorama style panoramic photographs of various locations. A single 360 degree camera system is used to take a complete panorama in one image, the same as existing high end photo-reality systems.
However, the clever bit comes when the user viewpoint standing in the middle of the cylinder starts to move around ? the view changes naturally. As they walk, the software changes the photo on the cylinder in real-time, with others taken just a few meters apart. This continual change results in a fluid sense of actually being there, in panoramic VR for very likely the first time.
