Another youngster?s death is being blamed on video gaming. Ten-year-old Andrey Smirnov in Russia has jumped to his death after being told he couldn?t play on his computer ever again.

Critics are hailing this as evidence that gaming and immersive environments on computer systems are a bad thing. Saying that without the computer in the first place, Andrey Smirnov would not have committed suicide.

We believe that is true. The computer mediated worlds opened up for him, as they open up for countless others, a ray of light in an increasingly ugly world. Like many, they were an escape from an increasingly wrong world, a way to relax, to get away from hells in the physical world. If he had never had access to one, he would have most likely turned destructively inward, then lashed out.

Anton Kashirin is one child who spends countless hours in front of the screen. The first thing he does when he gets home from school is head for the computer. Computer games help him relax he says.

As always, the crisis came when he was denied all access, and the prospect of those ?better worlds? being forever beyond his grasp is what most likely drove him to end it all.

If usage is a problem, moderate it, don?t cut it out clean.
