There, the beachfront party social virtual world that opened last year, and made all the headlines, is dying.

The Menlo Park entertainment start-up has stopped developing updates for There, its interactive online world, has laid off a number of employees the exact figure remaining undesclosed, and has scaled back customer support to an amazing degree.

Instead, it will concentrate on marketing There technology and licencing deals to outside agencies such as the military, who earlier this year, paid $3.5 million to build a planet earth scale model battlefield simulation

The company said it will still accept new subscribers to "There" for a $19.95 one-time fee and $4.95 a month, but no further updates or bugfixes will be coming.
