Date posted: 03/08/2004 Recently, a spate of high-technology, virtual reality arcade machines have been bringing near-immersion entertainment to the arcades. "It's kind of like going to a costume party and adapting an alter ego for a few minutes," said Randy Bergman, owner of Darrt Amusement, a company that supplies and services coin-operated games. Most virtual reality arcade games involve a three-dimensional form of physical interaction. Environment-based scenarios that simulate snowboarding, skiing, skateboarding, mountain biking, and white-water rafting leave riders stunned by the graphics, immersed from the environment, and sore from aching muscles. "Some of these games are so advanced that the government is using them as flight simulators for the armed forces," Bergman said.
