 Sprucing up open source's GPL foundation

The General Public License (GPL), core of the open source movement, is set to recieve a modern overhaul.

In the 13 years since GPL version 2 was released, GPL has become a mainstreal legal license, and not a fringe term used by a few independent developers - nowadays even the big guns use GPL software. The lisence has to expand, to remove the threat of patent infringement by companies bent on eliminating open source.

"The GPL has become the pivot point of a multibillion-dollar industry. Frankly, I don't think it was designed for that," said Mark Radcliffe, an attorney with Gray Cary who has studied the GPL and other licenses extensively.
