This single still is from the widescreen version of ?The Second Renaissance?, one of the Animatrix animated shorts. It has been considerably scaled back from the original material.
This is the final image of ?The Second Renaissance?, before the closing credits. The narrator goddess/AI stroking the outside of a pod in which a young male child lays cocooned in the fetal position, neural jacks covering his body, utterly bald, and with monitoring prosthesis grafted into his head. He floats in a vat of nutritional gel. The ending seems to be saying ?this is what our children are reduced to, their lives stripped away, to this?.
However, picture the subtle difference in message if we found that the child had a degenerative disease and volunteered to be placed in the pod. It?s a very different image isn?t it? There is no reason to believe that such total life support and brain activity biofeedback units have to be ?limited? to VR. They could just as easily be used to control a waldo body in the physical world. The body getting to live, whilst the brain believes itself inhabiting it.
If its better than the alternative, why not?
