ActiveWorlds Gate 5.0 launched on November the 26th 2009, in readiness for the launch of ActiveWorlds 5.0 on December the 1st 2009. This screenshot shows part of that world. Specifically, the inside of a room off the main plaza, detailing a handful of the resources for building and a look-see at some of the projects found on the platform.
it is well known that ActiveWorlds as a company, have never really gotten a firm grasp on good marketing strategies in the decade plus they have been in existence. Still, as this room is set-up along with a dozen others as the first things newcomers to the platform get to explore, there is an immediate and glaring problem, showcased by the avatar in this picture.
The floor space is utterly wasted. What would be at a physical convention site, or demonstration of any kind, the ideal space to erect all manner of promotional material, additional resources, partition walling with more details on, you name it, is here completely blank.
This is a fundamental failing made again and again, by ActiveWorlds, There, Second Life, Kaneva, and the other social worlds. It does not matter if there are data limits as to how many models you can put in, use larger models, that look more intricate, but having large empty areas in the middle of prime eyeball real-estate is a very, very bad idea.
It makes the platform look weaker than it should, and it makes it seem like you are lacking content to draw visitors in. Think of it akin to a shop that has all its products on the outer walls, and a great big empty space in the middle to mill about aimlessly. The only message that sends is "we are almost out of stock".
