 In light of the recent withdrawal by DARPA (American Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency) from the business of building brains in silico, we at VWN thought we would catalogue just who is, and who is no-longer attempting to build a brain this year.

DARPA, the American Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency, has quietly, and without fanfare, dropped its efforts to build an artificial human brain.
Yes: Blue Brain Project
The Ecole Polytechnique F?d?rale de Lausanne (EPFL), in Switzerland, and International Business Machines (IBM)'s joint attempt to build a brain out of chips continues unabated.
Yes: Stanford University, Building the Cortex in Silicon
An ambitious project to model the cerebral cortex in silicon is under way at Stanford. The man-made brain could help scientists understand how the most recently evolved part of our brain performs its complex computational feats, allowing us to understand language, recognise faces, and schedule the day. It could also lead to new neural prosthetics.

Scientists at The University of Manchester are building a new type of computer which mimics the complex interactions within the human brain.
The aim is to build a computer which mimics how nerve cells in the brain interact in a bid to engineer more 'fault tolerant' electronics.
Yes: CCortex Autonomous Cognitive Models of the brain as neural net software
Ad are attempting to recreate tyhe brain as a neural network in software, and linux hardware. They are building the CCortex Model, a bio-realistic neural network simulation of the human cortex and peripheral systems.

NEURON is a simulation environment for modeling individual neurons and networks of neurons.
