Closed-Loop Process

A closed-loop process is a type of sensory system used to give expert systems and other AIs a form of continuous feed of an outside environment. It is quite limited in functionality, but predictable with a known margin of error.

Closed loop processes work with a pre-defined system of variables. The system deals with sensor data on each of these variables and a known margin for error. It analyses the values of these variables from the most recent sensor gathering session, determines the optimal action to take, and takes it.

Undertaking this action then triggers the next sensor sweep, and so on. The problem comes with closed loop systems, when you introduce a new variable into the system. The loop cannot handle it, and so the variable gets ignored, with potentially disastrous consequences when used in embodied AIs.
