Metaverse

Metaverse is the name of the VR world from Neal Stephensen's 1992 book, 'Snow Crash', which is seen by many, as the defining book on how virtual environments will be.

It is a fully 3-D Internet wherein people interact through fleshed out avatars, forming relationships, creating objects, and hold down jobs with very real incomes. The Metaverse economy ties directly into the economy of the physical world, and it is in effect, a nation unto itself - just without a physical space location. Virtual residents own 'land', create objects, do business, and have fun.

Blogged Out: Snow Crash Mountain
A look at the growing push towards the metaverse, from a game development perspective, and at how social virtual worlds have to break away from the 'skills and levelling paradigm'.

This tome, written long before the Metaverse Roadmap, was one of the first large works to discuss how virtual spaces create entirely new kinds of space, and require mapping constructs and methodologies utterly alien to what had come before.

This book is of mixed usefulness. Its an official guide, endorsed by the people behind Second Life, and teaches the specifics of setting up a business in Second Life, running with their systems. In that way, it greatly simplifies the task.

SimStim is literally Simulated Stimulation, and is a logical parallel to VR. Rather than experiencing a full VR or AR experience in which your mind is placed inside a metaverse matrix, a completely simulated reality; or the joys of physical reality -meatspace- with additional VR components grafted on, SimStim opens up a third possibility.
