Date posted: 09/05/2006 An eye implant providing up to 3x optical magnification has completed Phase II/III human trials. VisionCare?s Implantable Miniature Telescope (IMT) is designed to combat vision loss by age-related macular degeneration (AMD). . The macula is a small area in the centre of the retina which specialises in the detailed central vision of whatever you are focussed at. The prosthetic telescope is implanted by an ophthalmic surgeon directly into the pupil of the eye. Nothing stands above the eye?s surface, so patients use natural eye movements to scan the environment. It works by spreading the central vision over the whole retina, bypassing the damaged section of tissue. However, its zoom capabilities do suggest a market in the future, for people with normal eyesight, but would like to be able to zoom in on an image ? we have all squinted at something.
