"There is something to be said for RL." As if to prove it to herself, she lifted her mug of very good, very strong coffee "No question."

Our Thoughts on this Quote

This is one of the greatest potential issues with sensory immersion. No matter how real the coffee tastes, how sharp the sugar or how smooth the milk, once you drink it you don't get the secondary effects.

No onrush of sugar, or caffeine in your blood. It is sensory stimulation only; once the substance has moved beyond the senses it has no further effect on you.

Therefore, if you wish to have the full effect, in particular the brain altering chemical rush, you still need to somehow add those chemicals to your bloodstream, after sampling the substance in VR.

Even assuming it is possible – which in theory it is – you are still going to be limited to feeling the effects of whichever chemical substances you have on hand. If you have no caffeine to put into your blood, no amount of virtual coffee is going to give you the full effect.

About the Book 'Otherland, Volume 1: City of Golden Shadow'
By Tad Williams
Produced By DAW Books

The first book in the Otherland Saga, City of Golden Shadow serves as an introduction and ground setting book that enriches and deepens the later works. Among the many aspects of life in this near-future world it depicts in detail, is an advanced virtual reality technology.

City of Golden Shadow introduces the basics of total immersion VR technologies, slightly further ahead than those of William Gibson?s Neuromancer. It delves into all the possible uses for such technology in stunning depth and detail, yet it does so in such a way that the pace of the plot never slackens.
