Programmed Mind

A programmed mind technically is not a mind at all. Instead, it is a series of procedures hard-coded into a computer system, dictating what input that system will respond to, and how it will respond to it. That system cannot respond to any input other than that which it is programmed to accept.

Early user interfaces and all early AI was created this way. Early embodied systems such as Honda's ASIMO robot were also created this way. It took ASIMO nearly 20 years to learn how to walk, because every single movement had to be preprogrammed into it, and every possible eventuality catered for by the programming. This is known as weak AI.

As a counter-example, strong AI consists of non-programmed minds that tend to pick things up much more intuitively, as they teach themselves how to react in different circumstances, and learn by experience, the same as humans do. However, such minds take a great deal of initial setup, crafting a neural network that its capable of learning, as the base system.

ED-209 and the Fear over Programmed Robotics
