The Animatrix
![]() The Animatrix is a collection of nine short animations, a mix of CG and hand drawn animation, examining different aspects of the Matrix universe. One of them, ?Flight of the Osiris? is direct canon to the series, and leads on to form backstory for the second and third films. The others tend to be thought provoking, looking at other aspects of VR from philosophical viewpoints, a detective story, what-if scenarios, and even a history of the future of the human race. All in all they are a truly fascinating amalgam of ideas, and poignancy, that can be leveraged again and again, to look at different aspects of the field. All of the characters portrayed have their own personalities, the animation standard is outstanding ? Osiris even outstrips the blockbuster Beowulf for CG character quality. There is no portrayal of cardboard characters here, and some of the memes are fairly disturbing if you think them through clearly. This collection is very highly recommended. If you are a fan of the Matrix trilogy, or even if you are not, there is so much here, to really make you think about VR and its implications. The individual animations are each reviewed separately.
