1. Synthetic intelligence or SI is an alternate term for artificial intelligence, with a slightly different meaning. The word artificial has implications that perhaps the intelligence created is not as good in some way, as a natural intelligence. Thus the term synthetic intelligence was coined, to signify a different way of thinking about artificial intelligence.
2. SI or swarm intelligence is a sub-field of AI, that deals with a large number of often relatively stupid elements that together behave as a cohesive intelligence. This is used in robotics to control several robotic waldoes from a central point or allow several separate robots to work as one. It is used in virtual environments to predict crowd movements or control animal flocks.
